Anyone who has repotted an echeveria knows the problem. You need to lift a rosette without snapping a leaf, get soil in around a rootball the size of a thumbnail, and brush grit off a plant that drops leaves if you look at it wrong. Kitchen forks and old teaspoons only get you so far.

What's In It And Why

• Two sets of tweezers. Straight for placing offsets and lifting leaves, elbowed for reaching into a bottle terrarium or behind an established plant without disturbing anything.
• Air blower. A rubber bulb that clears soil and grit off leaves without touching them. This is the tool people don't expect to use and then use constantly.
• Shovel, spade, scoop and rake. Four soil tools in miniature — one for filling, one for digging, one for pouring into a narrow gap, one for levelling a top dressing.
• Punch and seedling lifter. Make the hole, then place the plant into it. Far less root damage than pushing a cutting into compacted soil.
• Spray and watering bottles. A fine mist for propagation and cuttings, plus a 500 ml narrow-spout bottle for watering at soil level rather than over the rosette.
• Two brushes and a work mat. Because the real cost of repotting indoors is the clean-up afterwards.

Are these strong enough for outdoor beds?
No, and they aren't meant to be. The soil tools are light plastic and metal sized for pots and containers. Levering at compacted garden soil will bend them.

Is it only for succulents?
The name is narrower than the use. Anything grown small — bonsai, terrariums, seedlings in modules, houseplants in decorative pots — is exactly what this suits.

Are the scissors any good for pruning?
They're fine for cuttings, offsets, dead leaves and roots up to a few millimetres. For woody stems on a bonsai you want proper concave cutters.

Do I really need sixteen tools?
You'll use six of them constantly and the rest occasionally. Buying the tweezers, blower and scoop separately would cost most of this, which is the honest case for the kit.
