They all fail the same way. The blade is pressed from sheet steel, the neck is a folded tab riveted into a plastic handle, and the first time you lever against a stone the neck twists. After that it never sits straight in the soil again.

This one is forged rather than pressed — the head and neck are worked from a single piece of carbon steel. There's no join to fail, which is why the design hasn't changed in a hundred years.

Why It Lasts

• Forged carbon steel. Hammered to shape rather than stamped out of sheet. The grain of the metal follows the curve of the blade, which is what stops it bending at the neck.
• Cuts rather than pushes. The blade edge is thin and slightly tapered, so it slices through matted turf and root instead of compressing it. Less force from your wrist.
• Wooden handle. Warm in cold weather, doesn't sweat in hot weather, and can be sanded and re-oiled indefinitely. It also won't crack in UV the way moulded plastic does.
• Lighter and smaller than most. The narrow head is 28 × 5 cm and 120 g. Small enough to work between established plants without wrecking neighbouring roots.
• Two head shapes. Narrow for bulbs, plugs and tight spacing. Wide for moving volume — potting on, backfilling, mixing compost.

Common Questions

Narrow or wide?
Narrow if you mostly plant — bulbs, plugs, anything going into an established bed. Wide if you mostly move soil — potting, backfilling, container work. Most people who garden seriously end up wanting both, which is what the bundle is for.

Will it rust?
Yes, if you leave it out. Carbon steel is chosen for strength and edge, not for corrosion resistance. Wipe it clean, dry it, and give it an oily rag before it goes away for winter. A patina is fine and doesn't affect it.

Can I lever with it?
Within reason — it's forged, so it takes far more abuse than a pressed trowel. But it's a trowel, not a crowbar. If you're pulling against a buried brick, get a spade.

Is the handle treated?
It's a plain wooden handle. Some people prefer that, because you can sand out a rough patch and re-oil it. If it dries out over a few seasons, linseed oil brings it back.

Is it good for arthritic hands?
It's light, which helps, but the handle is a conventional straight grip rather than an ergonomic pistol shape. If wrist rotation is painful, an angled-handle trowel will suit you better than this.
