Pulling Steel Banding Tight By Hand Doesn't Work

Stainless cable ties are the right answer for fixing anything outdoors — tree ties, trellis to posts, mesh to fencing, signs, ducting, marine work. They don't perish in UV, they don't stretch, and they'll outlast the thing they're holding.

The problem is the last part. You can get a steel tie roughly tight with pliers, but not evenly tight, and the tail you're left with is a strip of razor-edged metal sticking out at head height.

• Wear gloves. Cut steel banding has burrs, and the offcut is sharp even when the fitted end isn't.
• Eye protection is sensible — tails can flick when they release under tension.
• Collect offcuts as you go. A short length of stainless band in grass is a hazard for mowers, animals and bare feet.
• Set tension to the band, not to maximum. Over-tensioning can snap a tie and release stored energy.

Common Questions

Does it come with cable ties?
No. The tool only — you buy the stainless band separately in the width and length your job needs. That's deliberate, since most people already have a preferred supplier.

Will it work with nylon zip ties?
It's built for stainless steel banding. It will pull and cut nylon, but you don't need a 560 g steel tool for that, and the tension settings are calibrated for metal.

What tie sizes does it handle?
Up to 12 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick, which covers the common self-locking and ladder-type stainless ties. Heavier banding needs a larger industrial tensioner.

Is the cut genuinely flush?
Flush enough that you won't catch a hand on it. It is not deburred — on installations at head height or where children are around, it's still worth running a file over the end.

Is it worth it for occasional use?
Honestly, if you're fitting five ties a year, pliers and a hacksaw will do. This is for people banding regularly enough that the time and the cut hands add up.
