The Gloves You Actually Keep On

Most gardening gloves get taken off within ten minutes. Either they're so thick you can't feel a seedling, or they're so thin that the first bramble goes straight through. So the gloves sit on the bench and you end up pruning roses barehanded again.

What They Get Right

• Breathable back. Polyester knit across the back of the hand, so sweat has somewhere to go. This is the difference between gloves you wear for an hour and gloves you wear all afternoon.
• Textured grip. The palm coating has a raised pattern that bites on a wet tool handle. Secateurs don't rotate in your hand mid-cut.
• Elasticated wrist. Snug enough that soil doesn't work its way in when you're digging with your hands, without a strap to fasten every time.

Common Questions

Are they puncture-proof?
Puncture-resistant, not puncture-proof, and the distinction matters. They'll stop bramble, rose thorn and rough bark. They will not stop a determined blackthorn spike or a chisel, and nothing in this weight class will.

What sizes do they come in?
One size, with an elasticated wrist and a stretch knit that fits most adult hands. If you have particularly large or particularly small hands, a sized glove will fit you better.

Are they waterproof?
No. The coated palm sheds water for a while, but the knit back lets water through. For wet weather or pond work you want a proper waterproof glove.

Can I put them in the washing machine?
Better not to. The coating doesn't like heat or agitation. Rinse them under a tap while they're on your hands, then dry them somewhere ventilated.

How long will they last?
A season or two of regular use, depending on how hard you are on them. The fingertips wear through first. These are working gloves at a working price, not a lifetime purchase.
