Nettles And Brambles Don't Care About Nylon Line

There's a point where a line head stops being a tool and becomes a delaying tactic. Waist-high nettles, established bramble, woody stems, saplings coming up through a neglected corner — the line snaps, you feed more out, it snaps again, and after twenty minutes you've cleared a metre.

Six manganese steel blades cut through all of it in one pass. The blades pivot, so hitting something solid swings them back instead of stopping the machine dead.

What The Design Gets Right

• Manganese steel blades. The same spring steel family used for mower blades — hard enough to hold an edge through woody growth, tough enough not to shatter when it finds a stone.
• Split, pivoting blades. Six blades hinged rather than fixed. When one strikes a rock or a fence post it folds back and keeps rotating. A one-piece blade transmits that shock straight into the gearbox.
• Less vibration than a solid blade. The pivoting arrangement is more forgiving through the shaft, which matters over an afternoon of clearing.
• 25mm centre bore. The standard mounting for brush cutters. An adapter kit is included to cover the common variations.
• Fits petrol and electric machines. As long as the machine is rated for a metal blade and has a guard.

Safety

• This is a metal blade. Only fit it to a machine the manufacturer rates for metal blades, with the correct guard in place. Fitting it to a line-only trimmer is dangerous.
• Full face shield, ear defenders, gloves, long trousers and boots. Metal blades throw debris much harder than nylon line.
• Keep everyone at least 15 metres clear while it's running.
• Expect blade thrust — the sideways kick when a blade catches something solid. Use the harness and both handles.
• Stop and inspect after any hard strike. Replace the head if a blade is cracked or a pivot is deformed.

Common Questions

Will it fit my trimmer?
If your machine has a 25 mm mounting and is rated for a metal blade, yes, and the adapter kit covers most of the rest. If your trimmer only ever came with a line head, don't fit this — the machine likely lacks the shaft, clutch and guard for it.

How thick a stem will it cut?
Comfortably through bramble, nettle and finger-thick saplings. Past roughly 2 cm of hardwood you want a proper brush blade or a saw — this will do it slowly and blunt fast.

Can the blades be sharpened?
Yes, with a file, following the existing bevel. Take the same amount off each blade or the head goes out of balance and shakes the machine.

Is it safe near fences and walls?
Safer than a fixed blade, because the pivots absorb the strike. But it will still chip a fence post and mark stone, and it can throw fragments. Slow down at boundaries.

Will it work as a lawn trimmer?
Overkill and imprecise. For lawn edges and around ornamental beds, keep using line. This is a clearing head for rough ground.
