Grafting Fails Because The Two Cuts Don't Match

A graft takes when the cambium layer of the scion meets the cambium layer of the rootstock along a decent contact area. Cut both by hand with a knife and you're trying to freehand two mirror-image surfaces that mate perfectly. Most people can't, which is why most first grafts fail.

Three Graft Profiles

• Omega (Ω) — the highest contact area and the most forgiving. The interlocking shape holds itself together while it knits, so it needs less binding.
• V — a clean wedge cut. Good on slightly mismatched stem diameters where you need to line up one side.
• U — a rounded profile that suits softer, greener material that would split under a V.

Why It Works

• Matched geometry. Both halves are cut by the same blade, so the surfaces mate along their full length. That contact area is what determines whether the graft takes.
• One clean pass. A sharp blade in a single motion, not a sawing action. Crushed or repeatedly cut tissue is dead tissue, and dead tissue doesn't fuse.
• Repeatable. Graft fifty and the fiftieth is as accurate as the first — which matters when you're topworking a whole tree or building up a nursery.
• It prunes too. The same tool handles ordinary cutting, so you're not carrying two.

Do the stems need to be the same thickness?
As close as you can manage — that's the single biggest factor in success. If they differ, line up one side so at least one edge of cambium meets.

What diameter does it handle?
It's built for pencil-thickness scion wood and comparable rootstock, which covers most bench and field grafting. Very thick or very thin material won't seat properly in the cutting head.

Do I still need grafting tape?
Yes. The omega profile holds itself better than a knife cut, but every graft needs binding and sealing to stop it drying out. Tape and wax aren't included.

When should I graft?
Late winter to early spring for most fruit trees — dormant scion wood onto rootstock that's just waking up. Summer budding is a different technique.

Will every graft take?
No, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. Matched cuts, compatible species, clean tools, correct timing and good binding all matter. This tool removes the cutting variable, which is the one most beginners get wrong.
