The Rake That Doesn't Bend When It Hits Something

A pressed-steel garden rake is fine on leaves. Put it into compacted clay, a mat of couch grass or a root run under a hedge and the tines splay, then bend, then stay bent — and from that point on it drags crooked forever.

ZencaRake 2.0 has individually forged tines set into a heavy head. It goes into ground that stops an ordinary rake, and it comes back out straight.

What It's For

• Tearing out root mats. Couch grass, ground elder and creeping weeds knit together under the surface. The tines get beneath the mat and lift it whole.
• Breaking compacted ground. Drive it in and pull back to fracture clay and hardpan rather than scraping across the top.
• Stripping thatch. Pulls out the dead layer that stops water and feed reaching lawn roots.
• Levelling and finishing. Once the hard work is done, turn it over and use the back of the head to grade a seedbed flat.

Choosing Your Tine Count

More tines means a wider head, more ground per pull, and more resistance to drag. Fewer tines concentrate your force into a narrower bite, which is what you want in genuinely hard ground.

• 5 tines — narrowest and most aggressive. Best for heavy clay, breaking new ground and tight beds.
• 6 tines — the general-purpose choice for most gardens.
• 7 tines — wider coverage for open beds and larger plots.
• 8 tines — widest. Best for allotments and big areas in soil that isn't heavily compacted.
