Common Questions

How many strokes does it take?
Two or three on a normally blunt edge. If a blade is chipped or badly damaged, it needs proper grinding first — this restores an edge, it doesn't rebuild one.

Will it work on stainless steel?
Yes. Tungsten carbide is considerably harder than any tool steel you'll find in a garden shed, stainless included.

Which side of the blade do I sharpen?
Only the bevelled side. On bypass secateurs that's the outer face of the cutting blade — sharpening the flat side ruins the bypass fit.

Can I use it on serrated blades?
No. Serrated edges need a tapered file that fits each tooth.

Is it safe if I've never sharpened anything?
The full-length guard keeps your fingers clear, and the built-in angle means there's no technique to learn. Draw the blade through away from you, slowly, and wear gloves.
